13 Things I've Learned Recently

1. A "culled egg" is a developing egg inside a chicken. I guess they don't just produce one egg at a time, but have several eggs in waiting. Once the chicken is butchered, the culled eggs are good in stews.



2. The asperagis that we eat is actually just the initial shoot that appears in Spring and should be cut immediately. If you let it keep growing, it looks like a beautiful wispy little tree.



3. When buying a new convection microwave, you should get the best brand possible. I tried an imported-brand and it could not cook. Toast shouldn't take 10 minutes. So I returned it and got a GE. Now I'm cooking!



4. When you buy a large appliance, don't let the kids play with the box until you are sure you don't have to return it.



5. Letting the kids do the Naked Raindance outside doesn't necessarily mean that it will rain soon, but at least the kids are having a good time!



6. I've learned how to drive a manual transmission, finally! The kids love to ride in the Beetle and it is fun to drive. But I still have to master going from stop to first to second on a hill.



7. Did you know that Tiger Lilly buds are good to eat? Try to get the smaller ones--the larger ones are too bitter. You can cook them up like green beans, but fresh and raw are just as good!



8. Dreams about yelling at your ex-boss are almost as satisfying as the real thing.



9. The fireflys in our back yard are amazing in the dark--almost like a Christmas light display, but constantly moving.



10. While walking down to the neighbors, I learned that my 2 1/2 year-old daughter doesn't like litter. It makes her want to cry.



11. Frog love to take a nighttime swim in my neighbors pool and will sing a loud chorus while sitting on the edge.



12. My dog tries to intimidate the large Buck that roams on our property, but I think the Buck intimidates him. He intimidates us, too.



13. I like snakes. While visiting our local nature center and my friend "The Snake Lady," I held a small rat snake. It was actually very nice.
